Case Studies Taipei Taoyuan Airport

Taipei – Dubai (Emirates) Taipei – Istanbul (Turkish Airlines)

The Challenge

ASM worked in partnership with Taipei Taoyuan Airport, one of the fastest growing airports in Asia, for the last three years on network strategy and route development. Initially ASM developed an in-depth market assessment to help Taoyuan Airport to identify its unique position in the Asia market, develop its network strategy to identify its key airline targets. Thereafter, ASM has worked with the Taoyuan Airport Management Team to deliver new air services for the airport.

Results

ASM worked with Taipei Taoyuan Airport to achieve the delivery of two of the largest airline brands in the world, with Emirates launching services in February 2014 and Turkish Airlines in March 2015.

Emirates finally launched a six x weekly Boeing 777-300ER route from Dubai to Taipei in February 2014, which quickly went to a daily flight, and has recently been upgraded to a 615 seat A380.  The Emirates flight now generates over 450,000 seats between Dubai and Taipei and is expected to generate nearly 350,000 passengers per year for Taoyuan. Yuanhung Ting, Deputy Manager, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation, commented, “ASM provided services to our airport which contributed to Taoyuan Airport securing a daily service to Dubai with Emirates airlines. The services were delivered on schedule and to our satisfaction”.

After two years of pursuing Turkish Airlines, the inaugural flight was on the 31st March 2015, with an A340-300.  Turkish Airlines quickly upgraded the daily service between Istanbul and Taipei from an A340-300 to a Boeing 777-300ER which will generate 200,000 passenger per year.  These two route success alone will generate half a million additional passengers for Taipei Taoyuan Airport ever year.

How?

ASM advised Taoyuan in the pursuit of Emirates, the ASM team worked with the Taoyuan Airport management in developing the business case, including a detailed traffic forecast of potential connecting flows behind Dubai as well as using it QSI model to understand the market share Emirates would attract on the Taipei – Dubai O & D sector. The business case was presented by the Taouyuan and ASM team at World Routes and Routes Asia and ASM guided Taoyuan with the airline negotiations.

The Turkish Airlines approach was similar with a strong traffic forecast being presented to the carrier, with a larger proportion of O & D traffic between Istanbul and Taipei. ASM assisted Taoyuan Airport with developing their relationship with Turkish Airlines as well as the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority.
